Welcome to the Crowborough U3A
A warm welcome to Crowborough U3A.
We are part of the Third Age Trust U3A movement which now comprises 820 local U3A's with a membership of over 272,000 members. The U3A is a self-help organisation for older people, no longer in full time employment, providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. It draws upon the knowledge and expertise of local members to organise and provide interest groups in which to share their knowledge. There are also a range of benefits and services which are provided by the Third Age Trust U3A to local U3A's as well as individual members.
Crowborough U3A was first formed in 2006, opening with a membership of 40 and an initial 6 groups. We have successfully grown over the last few years with a current membership of over 500 and 51 active groups. The groups are varied in interest and we are continually looking for new and existing members to set up and host further activity groups. There is a variety of outings and events organised throughout the year details of which appear in our newsletter.
If you wish to join Crowborough U3A and further your knowledge in a friendly and relaxed environment then contact us by either attending one of the monthly General Meetings, detailed in the Events page, or e-mail the Crowborough U3A Chairman via the Contact page.
Regular monthly General Meetings are held in the New Hall at the All Saints Church, Chapel Green, Crowborough and always have an interesting guest speaker... see Events page for details of future monthly talks. Join us from 2pm for an enjoyable afternoon with refreshments. Visitors and guests are always welcome although there is a charge of £2.
Annual membership fees are £15 for new or existing members and are due in October of each year. Members of other U3A's are welcome to join. A Membership Application form for 2013/2014 membership can be downloaded here. There is also a Gift Aid Declaration form, which will enable us to reclaim tax on your subscription at no extra expense to yourself, together with a voluntary Survey Form which would be of help to the committee.
Most activity groups are held in members' homes but some of the larger groups are held in more spacious premises for which there might be a small charge. If the group that you are interested in is shown as being fully subscribed then still make contact with the group co-ordinator via the link on the group page and request to go on their waiting list. You could even consider running an additional group if there are sufficient people on the waiting list. Help and advice can be given if required.
One of our newer members was uncertain about the U3A, its aims and requirements when he joined. 'The New Boy' was written by him a few months after joining our Creative Writing Group and is a tribute to what the U3A can provide.
