Wed Sep 17th 2014 "An Evening with Joe Swift"

I am contacting you on behalf of Leicestershire and Rutland Gardens Trust, as we thought that our Celebrity Lecture this year might be of interest to your members

It will take place on Wednesday 17th September at 7.30 p.m. and our speaker is the garden designer, TV presenter and writer, Joe Swift. Joe will talk candidly about his experiences of being a garden designer - turned TV gardener. Having presented Gardeners' World, the Chelsea Flower Show and most of the other RHS flower shows for 15 years, he has some great behind-the scenes stories and anecdotes. Joe will chart the gardening trends that have come and gone over the years, talk about his allotment and his 2012 Chelsea Gold Medal winning garden.

The lecture will be held at Leicester University, Ken Edwards Lecture Theatre 1, University Road. (A location map will be sent with tickets)

The cost of the lecture for guests is £15, which includes a glass of wine or soft drink.

Profits from this event will go to the Trust's educational programme: "Schools into Gardening", which awards small grants to schools and other bodies to encourage young people into gardening. This year, we are committed to making grants totalling £1400, including a £500 grant to Maplewell Hall Special Needs School of £500, so we are very keen to ensure that we have a full house in order to maximise our income.

To book, ring the Events Secretary on 0116-270-5711 or visit our website: http://www.lrgt.org/celebrity-lecture--an-evening-with-joe-swift_E89.html

Kind regards

Film Club
Wed Aug 13th 2014 1030am - The Phoenix
“Paths of Glory”

The film was made in 1957 and directed by Stanley Kubrick. It stars Kirk Douglas, and is based on the book by Humphrey Cobb.
Running time is 88minutes.

The film does not set out to suggest that war is glorious, but highlights much that was corrupt and cynical about the First World War. In this respect it is an anti-war film.

The cost is £4.60 (Including a tea or coffee) and you may pay on the door.

This is a good film for members of a U3A History Group or Reading Group.
