Totnes & District

Welcome

Welcome to the Totnes & District U3A. We have been up and running since January 2009 and are now in our fourth year, with a membership of over 200 who come from Totnes and the surrounding small towns and villages. At present there are 24 study groups with three more being planned - Spanish Conversation, Home-Craft and Table Tennis.

If you don't know Totnes - it has a history going back to Saxon times. In the 10th century it was founded as a fortified town and became a Royal burgh with its own mint. In Tudor days it was one of the richest towns in Devon and many of the merchants houses still remain. One of them in Fore Street, is now a very fine and rich museum. Amongst the legacies left behind are some stunning decorated plaster ceilings.

Today Totnes is a founder member of the Transition Towns social experiment which is working towards a world with life beyond oil. It's position midway between Dartmoor and the open sea makes it a perfect place from which to explore this region of Devon.
The town has two market days, one on a Friday and the second on a Saturday.

As to the U3A - membership costs £17 per annum and if you join from July, the fee is reduced.

Study groups are varied in subject so there should be something for all tastes, and there are ample opportunities for new groups to come into being. Don't hesitate should you have an idea for one. Table tennis and conversational Spanish are currently being planned.

There is a meeting with a speaker on the fourth Thursday of each month and a chance to meet up with members.

We have a summer outing and Christmas party, both of which have proved enormously enjoyable.
The newsletter is published quarterly and handed out at the monthly meetings. Group Leaders please take several copies for giving to members who do not come to the monthly meetings. The national magazine, U3A News is mailed to your home address.

If you are interested in meeting us with a view to joining, do come along to one of our monthly meetings on the fourth Thursday, held at St. John's Church, Bridgetown, Totnes starting at 10.30 a.m. with coffee and biscuits, and the Speaker at 11am following any points raised by Group Leaders.

We look forward to meeting you.
